Comparing the Religions of Christianity and Hinduism Essay -- compare
ââ¬Å"If I were asked to define the Hindu creed, I should simply say: Search after truth through non-violent means. A man may not believe in God and still call himself a Hindu. Hinduism is a relentless pursuit after truth... Hinduism is the religion of truth. Truth is God.â⬠-- Mahatma Gandhi "I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else." -- C. S. Lewis à à à à à Hinduism and Christianity are two religions that have been around for thousands of years. These religions have developed philosophies on certain subjects that can be compared in order to show their similarities and differences. Some of the main subjects that can be reflected upon are the paths to enlightenment or salvation, the religions' treatment of women, and the concept of the afterlife. This paper will give an analytic comparison of these religions through the discussion of these topics. à à à à à One of the most important elements of these religions is their history. The Hindu religion disputably began around 2500 years before the Common Era (B.C.E.) in India. It was geographically based along the Indus River, which was called ââ¬Å"Hinduâ⬠by the Persians who had migrated there. They also called the land Hindustan and itââ¬â¢s inhabitants, Hindus. After that, the religion that followed was called Hinduism. Today, almost 800 million people practice the Hindu religion (Spodek, 261) More than a religion, Hinduism is a way of life and a philosophy that is most concerned with spirituality and enlightenment. The idealism of the Hindu religion comes from the Vedas, which are the Hindu religion's oldest scriptures and are considered to be a direct revelation of God. The Upanishads are writings that take their themes from the Vedas. The Upanishads, however, seem to be more along the lines of allegories that give a fleshy quality to the religion rather than a very dry and out of touch feel that can be found in other religious texts. Lastly, the Bhagavad-Gita is a collection of teachings that are based on the conversation between Arjuna, a soldier for one of two warring families, and Lord Krishna, who appears as Arjuna's charioteer. In these conversations the two discuss everything from the purpose of life to the basis of reality. Much like Christian proverbs, the teachings of Lord Krishna give advice and general good sense and... ... to the physical realm. The Christian version only allows for one life to determine the fate of one's eternity. It seems that the only way to miss the trip to heaven would be to denounce Jesus and not give for forgiveness, but who is going to do that if given the option in eternity. à à à à à The comparison of these two religions is one that is full of differences with the occasional similarity. Mainly, I find Hinduism to be a religion full of positive aspects that give meaning and importance to any of its follower's lives. Conversely, Christianity is a religion that is steeped in contradiction and confusion. It uses guilt and dire consequences to push people into it arms. Where Hinduism allows for personal choice at a personal price, Christianity allows for personal freedom with almost no responsibility for personal action. Works Cited Spodek, Howard. Michael Moore: An Influential Filmmaker Essay -- Cinema
Michael Moore, an Academy Award-winning filmmaker is known for his highly controversial documentaries. He appeals to the newer generation, trying to educate people along with addressing our unresolved social issues in the United States. He gives incite to corrupt things that our government is involved in that citizens do not know about if they do not read or watch the news. Michael Moore proved to be a big-time influence through his work in the movie industry. His main message is to get people to stop following their government blindly, but rather speak out, ask questions, get involved, and most of all shows peoples power to be able change what needs to be changed. He proves being patriotic means taking responsibility and being informed about whatââ¬â¢s happening in the media and all of Michael Mooreââ¬â¢s films give the audience this. Time magazine named Michael Moore one of the Worldââ¬â¢s 100 most influential people. Through his Oscar and Emmy awards, he proves even a powerless author and producer with nothing more than a pen and a movie camera can make a tremendous difference. His documentary Bowling for Columbine reiterated that by a determination and persistence that not only him, but patriots can create change. He interviewed some of the surviving victims of the Columbine shootings along with Charlton Heston, the NRA president. He shows the gruesome effect of allowing guns and bullets to be so easily accessible. Kmart was his main destination and he took it upon himself by going right to the top of a major corporate food chain. The documentary was about how he was able to get them to stop selling bullets completely. Getting Kmart to stop selling bullets doesnââ¬â¢t mean that youââ¬â¢re going to prevent kids from going somewhere ... ...n in public, which many people are not courageous enough to do, and for that many respect him. Michael Moore proves that one man can make a difference. He is a great example of exercising our right to free speech and questioning the government. If something doesnââ¬â¢t seem right he is a spokesperson for finding out the truth. Michael was a small town boy who grew up to become one of the most influential documentary film makers of our time. Locke and Hobbes
What is politics? Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as ââ¬Å"the total complex ofà relations between people living in society.â⬠This phrase is the root of all politics and allà government. Whether we are ruler or subject, in the end we are all just ââ¬Å"people.â⬠And how canà ââ¬Å"peopleâ⬠best relate to each other? Over the years, countless individuals believed that theyà possessed the magic answer to this age-old question. Two figures in particular have endured theà praise and the criticisms: Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. Each man represents a philosophyà that has marked him in history and in the popular consciousness. And each man offers hisà unique commentaryââ¬âalong with some surprising commonalitiesââ¬âon this abstract word we callà politics. How should an affective government approach its duties and functions? John Locke and Thomas Hobbes did hold some similar viewpoints on governmentââ¬â¢s responsibilities. Both men favored a social contract between government and its people (Baker, 2000). Hobbes stated in Leviathan, ââ¬Å"Whensoever a man transferreth his right, or renounceth it, it is either in consideration of some right reciprocally transferred to himself, or for some other good he hopeth for thereby.â⬠In other words, a man must be willing to sacrifice some of his basic rights in exchange for a promise of security and stability from his government. Ever since Moses and Biblical times, Hobbes points out, Man has operated on a contract system (Panagia, 2003). Likewise, John Locke also advocated this precursor to federalism (Baker, 2000): ââ¬Å"men, when they enter into society give up â⬠¦ liberty of a kind; yet it being only with an intention in every one the better to preserve himself, his liberty and propertyâ⬠¦.â⬠(Locke, 2001) Locke believed that entering into such a covenant with government officials would best serve a ââ¬Å"common goodâ⬠and serve to create a ââ¬Å"common lawâ⬠ââ¬âideals which were also shared by Hobbes (Baker, 2000). Hobbes himself claimed that ââ¬Å"the point of the social contract is to orchestrate a multitude into some recognizable wholeâ⬠¦.â⬠(Hobbes, 1968). The government was dependent on the support of the people, and its ââ¬Å"legitimacyâ⬠¦stable only as long as the public continues to recommend itâ⬠(Hobbes, 1968). Once the function of a government is determined, the next question becomes, ââ¬Å"Who is theà government?â⬠On this point, Hobbes and Locke part ways. Since Hobbes held that human beings were essentially ââ¬Å"born bad,â⬠then logic would follow that they are not fit to rule themselves.à Instead, they need ââ¬Å"an overarching power to awe themâ⬠â⬠¦..likened to a sea monster, or a ââ¬Å"leviathanâ⬠(Geib, 2002). Hobbes argued for a single-person leadership by claiming that multiple voices of authority created ââ¬Å"too much diffidenceâ⬠(or difference). Such confusion would inevitably plunge mankind back into a primitive state of warfare, the very condition it sought to eradicate through laws and government (Kreis, 2005): ââ¬Å"for powers divided mutually destroy each otherâ⬠(Hobbes, 1968). Hobbes had witnessed firsthand the conflicts between the English king and Parliament, which hurled that country into a state of near-civil war (Chodorow, 1994). War and conflict resulted from every manââ¬â¢s universal need for power. When one puts such strong egos into one room, resolution can never hope to be obtained. To Hobbesââ¬â¢ thinking, an entrustment of the power to one individual was the best way to ensure stability. And a monarchy, with its fixed and non-debatable succession of rulers, was Hobbesââ¬â¢ preferred choice of government (Panagia, 2003). Although Hobbes anticipated such democratic mantras as ââ¬Å"the right to remain silentâ⬠and the ââ¬Å"right to property,â⬠his association with democracy affectively ends there. His absolute monarchy refutes the people as a sovereign power, and his concerns for individual liberty are miniscule (Gray, 2003).à In fact, Hobbesââ¬â¢ conservative views infuriated John Locke to such a degree that he published his own Treatises of Government, advocating a public-run government based on the liberty of the citizen. Locke raged that Hobbesââ¬â¢ monarchy left ruler and subjects in the very state of turmoil it proclaimed to avoid (Chodorow, 1994). A singular government could only serve to oppress and deny. Government should instead divide itself into branches, each serving its own specialized function while keeping the other branches from becoming too powerful (like the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of American government today). (John Locke, 2001) After all, Locke claims, the people cannot sacrifice more power than they possessed in their natural, pre-law state. Once the people enter into a social contract with their chosen government, then the sovereignty necessarily rests with the people (Landry, 1997). The people declare their leaders, and decisions rest with the ââ¬Å"consent of the majority, giving it either by themselves or their representatives chosen by themâ⬠(Locke, 2001).à The government may tax, it may allocate funds based on need (Landry, 1997), but it ââ¬Å"can never have a right to destroy, enslave, or designedly to impoverish the subjectsâ⬠(Locke, 2001). Most crucial in Lockeââ¬â¢s philosophy, the people rule. In the end, we are left with the question, ââ¬Å"Whose philosophy is best?â⬠à Give us anotherà thousand years, and we will still probably be quarrelling about the answer.à Perhaps it is best à instead to let each man have his final say on the subject and leave it at that: ââ¬Å"During the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that conditions called war; and such a war, as if of every man, against every man.â⬠ââ¬â(Hobbes, 1968) ââ¬Å"It is a power that hath no other end but preservation, and therefore can never have a right to destroy, enslave, or designedly to impoverish the subjects..â⬠.ââ¬â(Locke, 2001) References Baker, W. The Duke of Delirium: Duke Orsino Analyzed Through Structuralism
Orsino, the Duke of Delirium: Why Our Leaders Will Never Be Self-Aware Shakespeare adorns Orsino, the Duke of Illyria, with numerous character faults: narcissism, capriciousness, impatience; even Olivia finds the Duke repulsive in his ââ¬Å"embassyâ⬠(1. 5), and Feste dubs him ââ¬Å"a foolish witâ⬠(1. 5). It is not until Viola enters that Orsino is painted in a new brighter light, and even then, the Duke acts entitled, shallow, and overly masculine (2. 4). Although ââ¬Å"Twelfth Nightâ⬠is not a tragedy, Orsinoââ¬â¢s circumstance is tragic. He is trapped in a vicious hierarchy: a noble wall that separates him from others, protecting his off-putting persona. Because of his status, citizens cannot communicate to him his flaws. Because they cannot communicate, he is left stagnant at the end of the play. When analyzed via structuralism, Orsinoââ¬â¢s character articulates the Ur Code that all noble men, protected by a thriving kingdom, act entitled and superior. Interestingly enough, the opposition: ââ¬ËOrsinoââ¬â¢s perception of selfââ¬â¢ verses ââ¬ËOtherââ¬â¢s perception of Orsinoââ¬â¢ (shown below) displays the only common attribute shared between the personal view and the outsiderââ¬â¢s view of Orsino: nobility. While this may seem obvious, it explains the lack of communication between the governed and Orsino. The title, ââ¬Å"Duke,â⬠ultimately determines all of the opinions, and also prevents the presentation of these faults to Orsino. When it comes to Orsino, the fact that he holds power is what makes him feel entitled to constant entertainment from Feste, undying love from Olivia, and continuous approval from those he rules. Orsino is oblivious to his changeability and narcissism, which develops the irony of this situation. Orsinoââ¬â¢s Perception of Orsino| Illyriaââ¬â¢s Perception of Orsino| Great lover/ Romantic | Impatient | Constant | Fickle | Noble | Noble | Masculine | Insincere | Entitled/ Superior | Vainglorious/ Narcissistic| Shakespeare may have inserted this irony into ââ¬Å"Twelfth Nightâ⬠to further the theme ââ¬ËHe/She is not what it appears. ââ¬â¢ In the same way as Viola is perceived as a man, but is really a woman, Orsino is perceived as a jerk, but considers himself brilliant. The only difference is that Violaââ¬â¢s perception of self is correct and Orsinoââ¬â¢s is incorrectâ⬠¦that is, if we are allowed to judge! This question, perhaps, is the largest piece of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s message. The constant switches between gender (Viola/ Cesario), standing (Feste/ Sir Topas), and identity (Sebastian/ Viola) turn the audienceââ¬â¢s perceptions upside down and make us question simple things like whether Orsino is good or bad. The Duke wins the heart of Viola in the end, but remains a stagnant ruler. Though they are to be married, he still views himself as being in control of her: ââ¬Å"And since you callââ¬â¢d me master for so long,/Here is my hand: you shall from this time be/Your masterââ¬â¢s mistressâ⬠(5. ). A female ruler would never have this level of authority, for it is not considered dignified or proper, further proving the point that only males in power possess an overwhelming sense of entitlement. Male entitlement, sadly, is a pattern established in many other portrayals of leaders from Caesar to King George III. Our culture and hierarchies prevent accurate communication, leaving rulers in a state of delirium, a state which Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play s intended for us to be in all along.
Disclosure issues- voluntary versus mandatory
Now a dayââ¬â¢s most of the companies are trying to find out ways to attract as much capital as possible. With the continuation to wards market globalisation the urge to introduce harmonise global accounting standards have been increased. In order to attract larger amount of capital in the different regions of the world it is important for the companies to present the information in the financial statements, which is understandable by a diverse group of people. Most of the world organisations are trying to find out ways towards the general standards. The formation of IASC in 1973, was the result of such efforts by different countries including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, UK and US. This international body has issued more than 30 International Accounting Standards and has given a general presentation of the framework of the preparation and information availability of information in the financial statements. Although the organisation has adopted English as its formal language but the standards are translated into many other languages used in the world to make them understandable by as many people as possible. The main hindrance in the way of the use of common standards between the nations is that they are not legally imposed. The use of International Accounting Standards is a voluntary act of the countries. (Taylor & Pincus, 2002; p. 39) 2. Definition of Risk: Smith (1999) defines risk as a decision expressed by a range or possible outcomes with attached probabilities. When there is a range of possible outcomes but no assumed probabilities, there is only uncertainty (ibid. ).Hertz & Thomas (1984) have suggested that ââ¬Å". Risk means uncertainty and the results of uncertaintyâ⬠¦ risk refers to a lack of predictability about problem structure, outcomes or consequences in a decision or planning situation. â⬠Risk is defined, as a bad notion is the most important stimulants for life. Uncertainty, far from being a symptom of im perfection, is in fact a natural property of economics, indeed, probably of all life systems . . .. Uncertainty is the name of the game in the service economy. (Giarini, 2000)According to (Feynman, 1998) it is in the admission of ignorance and the admission of uncertainty that there is hope for the continuous motion of human beings in some direction that doesn't get confined, permanently blocked, as it has so many times before in various periods in the history of man. â⬠Adams (1995) defines risk as the ââ¬Å"balancing actâ⬠in which the actors ââ¬Å"balance the expected rewards of their actions against the perceived costs of failureâ⬠in a world in which both it and our perceptions of it are constantly being transformed by our effect on the world and its effect on us.In a ISO/TMB Risk Management Terminology Paper (1999) risk is defined as combination of the probability of an event and its negative or positive consequences,â⬠The royal Society (1983) defined ri sk as ââ¬Å"a particular adverse event occurs during a stated period of time, or results from a particular challenge. â⬠Importance of Risk Disclosure: Murphy (1999) sees Financial reporting and financial statements in particular can be thought of as a lens through which one could view a business.Financial reporting provides a broader view of the business than that provided by financial statements only. In other words, financial reporting encompassed financial statements, but it is not limited to financial statements. It is assumed that by providing information that meets the needs of investors and creditors, the company also meet the information needs of other external parties, it would be able to provide superior information if it treated each potential group of external users separately and prepared different information for each group. This approach is impractical, however, and the company instead out for preparing what is referred to as general-purpose information that we believe is useful to multiple user groups. With the change in the economic environment the list of factors of production has included intangible assets such as information and knowledge. The intangible assets are replacing the old sets of assets. ââ¬Å"In order to keep on delivering profits the business must keep on investing in different projects in order to improve their organizational capabilities. These investments improve the capabilities of the business to respond to the customer demands, the external contacts of business reduces the risks attached to the products, internal integration improve the productivity of organization continuous experimenting not only improve the value creation but also enhance the image of the organization in business. These investments are very important for the businesses to survive it is necessary to measure the cost, inventory, space and quality savings measured by traditional capital budgeting systems. Most of the traditional accounting techniques measure the future flow of income by undertaking an investment which is not easy to calculate since the stream of income is expected to increase in future and the managers cannot decide to assign the right value to the future benefit. Rather than that it is easier to the calculate investment. This is due to the difficulty the future organisation face in calculating the future benefits; most organisations normally do not undertake new investments. (Enterweb, 2005)The use of intangible assets has created difficulties on the other hand also. People believe in what they see. The process of interaction of ideas and assets has been revolutionised. Developing trust and understanding with stakeholders is very important in order to turn knowledge in value. Today, the companies are required to report the performances not only on financial basis but also should under cover the issues such as vision, strategy, risks, value drivers, KPIs etc.The founders of the Global Association of Risk Profes sionals (GARP), Lev Borodovsky and Marc Lore, wrote in Risk Professional, ââ¬Å"no matter what types of methods are used, the key to risk management is delivering risk information, in a timely and succinct fashion, while ensuring that key decision makers have the time, the tools, and the incentive to act upon it. â⬠(Lev & Lore, 1997) Externally reported financial information is largely historical in nature. It looks back in time and reports the results of events and transaction that already have occurred. While historical information is very useful in assessing the future, the information itself is more about the past than it is about the future. A comparison of the historical trends with the future trends can be found helpful in better understanding of the information by the shareholders and other related people. (Financial Economists Roundtable, 1996) The improvement in public scrutiny and controlled market discipline is largely dependent upon the meaningful and accurate dis closure of information. This not only helps the shareholders but also helps the organisation to conduct business in a safe and efficient manner by achieving their targets through improving their risk management processes. The researchers find many gaps in the appropriate disclosure of risk by the organisations. Many surveys have been conducted, a wide variety of studies and interviews from the information users and shareholders have pointed out towards gaps in the currently disclosed information. The demand of provision of accurate and timely information is increasing.Business reporting effect people from every work of life an effective allocation of resources strengthens an economy by promoting productivity, innovations and an efficient and liquid market. Adequate information plays an important role in reporting the risks and opportunities of investing in business venture. To make effective decisions people need accurate information. The completeness and timeliness of information en hances the probability of taking the most appropriate decisions by the investors.Perhaps the foremost social and ethical responsibility levied upon private and public organisation in recent decades is the adoption of fair and just accounting practices. This responsibility is being increasingly codified in laws and various accounting standards. Its influence is becoming increasingly pervasive through a constant series of new and improved standards as well as steady enlargement in the size and scope of administering agencies. The voluntary disclosure of information by the companies will lead to the competitive advantage for the company in the market and will provide help to gain enormous amounts of capital all over the world. US Regulations for Risk disclosure: The US GAAP was founded in 1930 after one year of the historical depression in the US stock market in 1929. Till 1934 the companies kept on disclosing the information voluntarily. SEC was established in 1934 with the authority t o establish the accounting standards but also to make sure that these standards are used in the preparation of the disclosures.Since the issue was very complex the private sector also started assisting the SEC in 1938 in order to settle the accounting standards. The most important and unique characteristic of the US GAAP is that its strength is tested in the market in which retail investors with banks and entrepreneurs invest. Now FASB is responsible to set US accounting standards. The ultimate responsibility of protecting the interest of the financial information users lies on SEC and it is fulfilling its functions since decades by constantly forming and developing set of accounting standards according to changing needs.A history of 70 years of interpretation and implementation of US GAAP in different industries has make it one of the most reliable and applicable set of standards. This application of 70 years has helped the accounting practitioners and professionals in filling the gaps and flaws in these standards which has not make them perfect but improved their reliability and tested their strength. The main hurdle in the way of adoption of IFRS for US is that the application and strength of IFRS is not tested for as long as the US GAAP.IFRS are relatively newly developed as compare to US GAAP. The decision to change the US GAAP into the IFRS cannot be taken in a snapshot the process will be time taking, as a huge change is needed to be brought. The EU adoption of the IFRS was very steady and easier as compare to the US. This is because the unification of 25 countries in a union with different economic, cultural and social background is a big task in itself hence the change of accounting standards is a relatively important but small part of it.Despite all the differences in the financial market environment the U. S see the implementation of the IFRS as an opportunity to implement and introduce the better standards to improve the creditors accessibility. Th e process of convergence has started of the U. S GAAP in the IFRS, which will come to success if mutual consensus will be developed. The cutting edge IFRS has that they have prepared by the most experienced and brilliant accounting professionals but has a negative point of not having a long history of implementation and strength testing.International Accounting Standards: In the January of the year 2006 the accounts of all the listed companies shifted to the International Financial Reporting Standards. Under the International Financial Reporting standards all the listed companies should present their fair information regarding the companyââ¬â¢s financial position, performance and cash flows. Despite the pressure from the International accounting agencies, some of the Governments are still reluctant to impose International accounting standards in their stock markets.Although there are big differences in the accounting standards in most of the economies of the world but the main ai m of all the accounting systems is to ensure fair and transparent corporate governance and financial reporting. The adoption of the International standards will lead to decrease in the accounting scandals and increase the adoption of common standard all over the world. Conclusion: Degree of Information varies largely from institution to institution. The amount of information made available to the shareholders largely depends upon the volume of financial instruments and the type of financial instruments used by the company. It is estimated that the shareholders of a financial institution is more required to have the risk related information as compare to that of the shareholder of an industrial company. Financial risks are the important part of the financial business operations on the other hands it is generally a by-product of an industrial companyââ¬â¢s daily business. At the very minimum, a company should keep shareholders informed about the types of financial instruments used a nd their purposes. It must make a distinction between instruments that are used for hedging and those that are not, as well as the relevant accounting policies. It should disclose the notional principal of these instruments, their maturity, cash requirements, market value and credit risk. It should also tell shareholders how the firm monitors the values of these instruments. Where possible, firms should also disclose the firmââ¬â¢s market risks; if quantitative information is not possible then a qualitative discussion should be included. (13 Questions on Risk Management)

Christianity and Time Period Essay
Christianity had a big impact on Europe culturally, economically, and politically through the 600 to 1750 C. E. time period. Christianity during these time periods had great many changes but also had a variety of continuities that were alike as well. The Christian faith through this time period in Europe went through multiple reforms. Reforms such as the Protestant Reformation, led by Martin Luther, had a severe impact on the Catholic Church and Christians everywhere in Europe. Also the change of the political power of the papacy and the effect it also had on Europeââ¬â¢s economy. Culturally Christianity had a big impact on Europe, seeing as almost everyone in that region considered themselves Christians. Christianity during the 600ââ¬â¢s was on the rise and this caused various different forms of ideas of what people thought Christianity was. Most Christians in the 600ââ¬â¢s to the 1500ââ¬â¢s were Catholics and the Catholic Church had clear power in Europe politically and economically. Of course, this all started to change around 1517 when Martin Luther published ââ¬Å"The Ninety-Five Thesisâ⬠that got people thinking about the downfalls of the church and the reasons to join the Protestant Church during this time period which effected European culture in such a short period of time because of one manââ¬â¢s attempt to overthrow the Catholic Church in Europe in the 1500ââ¬â¢s. This split between the Christians led to European Wars of Religion in the 1600ââ¬â¢s that eventually ended and came to peace with the ââ¬Å"Peace of Westphaliaâ⬠. Despite the ending of the wars Europeââ¬â¢s Church was still split in two and caused many changes in Europe culturally. Although there were a great many changes in Europeââ¬â¢s culture there was also a continuity that kept these three time periods alike. This continuity was the fact that despite all of these obstacles that the Catholic Church and the Christians face over the 600 to 1750 time period they still kept going and stayed intact because of the love of culture and religion in Europe during this time period. Economically Christianity affected Europe in a variety a different ways.
