The Brothers K :: essays research papers
The Brothers K by David James Duncan Theme Statements: 1. The Brothers K represents the concept of social interaction between people, whom have very different belief systems. 2. The novel, The Brothers K, enables the reader to understand a childââ¬â¢s idolization of a given sport, in this case, baseball. 3. The novel represents the world and its inhabitants on a miniscule level, by conveying the differences between the characters and how they act towards one another. Quotes: Quote 1: "Irwin is in his easy chair, reading last Octoberââ¬â¢s Organic Gardening. Winter is lying across his lap." Page 644 This quote represents the generational gap as it dwindles into nothingness. Age has become such an important factor for anyone in this era. Few realize, though, that every generation is nearly the same. The only difference between any two generations is technology. All generations are plagued by the same problems and all hope that their children wonââ¬â¢t face the same hardships. That is a case, which will never happen. Quote 2: "ââ¬â¢Except the bad thing is, the real humdinger, see, is that I tried for CO status, being a Christian and all. And weird things happened. Andâ⬠¦wellâ⬠¦I didnââ¬â¢t get it." Page 358 The dramatic realization of the fact that the war will affect a member of the Chance family is apparent in this quote. The amount of sorrow and emotions felt by the Chance family, and for that matter, all families who had children, brothers, husbands, or fathers, drafted into what many felt was a needless war. The novel brings to life what heartache many Americans had to face during the Vietnam era, a heartache that few in my generation have had the ability to realize. Quote 3: "Problem #1: War" Page 371 The novel illuminates light on the situation not just during the Vietnam era, but also rather throughout all history and the future to come. Throughout mankindââ¬â¢s occupation of earth, we have been plagued by war and the sufferings caused by it. Nearly every generation of people to walk this earth have experienced a great war once in their lifetimes. For instance, Vietnam for my fatherââ¬â¢s generation, World War 2 for my grandfatherââ¬â¢s, and World War 1 for my great-grandfatherââ¬â¢s. War has become an unavoidable factor of life. Looking through history and toward the future, I grow concerned over the war that will plague my generation, for it might be the last war. Quote 4: "Then I noticed how first President Johnson and now President Nixon pretty much talk gibberish and lie like rugs and all my older brothers except Irwin hate them.

Mt. St. Helens
Helene eruption affected Washington State's Economy On Sunday, May 18, 1980, at 8:AMA, Mat. SST. Helene erupted. Most people don't realize how the eruption affected our economy. It affected Washington's forestry / forest production, trade, transportation, topography, fisheries, and wildlife. Our Economy lost millions of dollars. Let's see how it affected our economy. First, let's start with forestry/forest production. This affected companies which had been logging. The companies had to cut back on logging while the blasted timber was being harvested.Although the lack of umber caused fluctuations In the market prices for logs, such variation were outweighed in large measures by the downward pressure on market prices generated by the depressed level of the economy. Also, the presence of the ash on the ground and on the logs presented serious problems in harvesting of the logs, and their processing into products. The ash, being gritty in nature, caused extensive wear on chain saws, chip per knives, and other cutting equipment, thus raising costs of logging and of manufacturing. Also, Washington being one of the three Pacific Northwest states plays a role in trade.Washington particularly is important for products like wheat, flour, lumber, and wood products. The main loss was the ash damage to crops like fruit trees, wheat, and barley. The trade for lumber and wood products also decreased from the loss of trees. Trade was also affected from transportation. Without transportation they couldn't send the exports. Transportation was damaged by ash fall, mudslides, floods, and the blast. As a result that damaged 63 miles of roads, about 25 bridges, and blocked the Columbia River. The highest of all the bridges in the National Forest Service Land damaged was a gig steel- girder. Also, nine bridges by the Tuttle River. The combination of damage to roads and bridges was about $1 12 million dollars, A result of Mat. SST. Helene blow was mudslides In the Tuttle and Cowlick Riv er. When the cowl flooded water lost speed as they mixed with the Tidal Columbia; they could no longer carry nearly as much sediment. Consequently, somewhere between 40 million and 60 million cubic yards of volcanic material entered the Columbia River. The Columbia River was blocked no longer than a week. Traffic resumed 5 days after the eruption. TheColumbia River ports were capable of normal operation no longer than a month after the eruption. The damage of the Columbia River created a loss of about 4 percent of all cargo that would have been otherwise passed through the ports in 1980. The Columbia River repairs were $44 million dollars but it was of relatively short duration. The landscape (or topography) of the area around Mat. SST. Helene was greatly affected by the eruption. The blast blew approximately 1. 5 cubic kilometers off the top of the were a major product of the eruption. Most of the north and south forks of the Tuttle River were destroyed. Many other rivers around the mountain, like the Green River and the Cowlick River, had increased silt and sediment deposited, and thus their capacity for water flow and navigation reduced. The second the blast played with the river system, it was serious. The immediate danger was flooding. The communities around the Cowlick and Tuttle River were threatened by the mudflows. Erosion was another danger. In the blast area the devastation was almost complete. The grounds were stripped of vegetation and the natural barriers to erosion were destroyed. Immediately after the blast there was evidence of erosion on the hillsides. As the lilies eroded, it increased the amount of soil and rock. As time went by, the soil and rock then entered into the rivers. The damaging effect of Mat. SST. Helene eruption to fisheries was substantial. It resulted primarily from mudflows and floods. The eruption adversely affected the entire Mat. SST. Helene drainage system. All of the fish in the Tuttle and in the Cowlick Rivers were kille d by the eruption. Salmon was the main fish impacted. The majority of them were the young salmon (about 400,000) that were on their way downstream at the time of the eruption. The fisheries estimated a loss of about 12 million Juvenile almond. The salmon losses included all the salmon from all the affected rivers at that time. The dredging of the ship channels in the Columbia and Cowlick Rivers was also believed to have killed many fish. Normally there was no dredging at that time because of the fish migration, but large scale dredging was carried out during the eruption. Fish in the Columbia River were affected by temperatures caused by the eruption. All hatcheries in the region had their costs increased as a result of the necessity of cleaning up the ash that had entered their systems. There was also a cost associated with moving fish from one location to another. The blast destroyed about 154 miles of trout streams and 26 lakes. The total cost of damage for fisheries was about $22 million dollars. Finally, not only did fish die but so did other wildlife. It was estimated by the Washington State Game Department that 1 ,551 ,OHO animals (not including the fish) died because of the eruption. Among the casualties there were about 5,250 elk, 6,000 deer, 200 bears, 100 mountain goats, and 15 cougars. The blast destroyed 195 square miles of habitat. Wildlife in ash-covered areas suffered some chronic health damage room the ash fall, but didn't become a widespread problem.Respiratory damage to grazing animals was a major concern, but it usually develops only after years of exposure to airborne dust, so it didn't seem likely. The ash did not appear to be harmful when ingested by grazing animals, but it could injure fish. The ash was extremely sharp and could severely lacerate gills, causing injury or death. The grand total for everything was about 1,213 million dollars. Washington's Economy was definitely affected by Mat. SST. Helene eruption. I hope this information helps you understand how the eruption affected our economy.

Cesarââ¬â¢s Mourning Essay
The book subject of this paper is the classical literary work of Oscar Hijuelos titled: ââ¬Å"Mambo Kings Play Songs of Loveâ⬠. The book revolves around the lives of two musically inclined brothers who migrated to America from Cuba. The brothers were Nestor and Cesar. As found in the bookââ¬â¢s title the central theme was ââ¬Å"loveâ⬠. The book has expressed different forms of love for different kinds of relationships. It expressed unconditional love for a brother, like what Cesar and Nestor had for each other. It expressed love for the woman you married, like how Nestor felt for Dolores. It expressed love for a woman you know you can never have, like how Cesar felt for Dolores or how Nestor felt for Maria. These interplay of emotions provided for the central theme of the book which also made way for the resolution of the question why Cesar canââ¬â¢t mourn for Nestor. This paper will seek to answer such question through the use of a structured argument. In order to be able to support its contention that Cesar cannot truly mourn for Nestor for two reasons: because unconsciously or consciously he knew he was better of without Nestor and because Cesar was responsible for making Nestor unhappy (Thesis Statement). The line of thinking pursued by this paper may be dark and offensive to some. Still an open mind will find that when they look closer this contention is in fact meritorious. Cesar cannot truly mourn for Nestor. One cannot truly mourn for someone else if he knows that he is better off without him. This is easy to see. Imagine the life of Cesar if Nestor had died. The woman he loved, Dolores, will be his for the taking. He would no longer have to deal with pulling the weight of a younger brother who had no ambition but to open a bar and come back to his Maria. True that the book never expressed that Cesar felt like this. However, a careful look and examination of the story itself will show us that this line of argument is very much tenable. The loss of someone when beneficial to us denies us from the emotion of mourning. It is true that when one experiences joy when another one passes away is devious and callous. However not mourning for someone is not necessarily devious and callous. Let us presuppose that Cesar was sad that Nestor passed away. He may indeed be sad that the brother he loved so much passed away. But can he mourn for him? No, because consciously or unconsciously he knew that the death of Cesar would benefit him. This is a sadistic and cruel interpretation of the emotions of Cesar. Sadistic and cruel it may be but tenable and meritorious it still is. One of the statements in the book that professed this fact was: ââ¬Å"The deepest urge in human nature is the desire to be important to be great the rare individual who satisfies this angle will hold people in the palm of his hand. So even the undertaker will regret his deathâ⬠(Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, Hijuelos) The second reason why Cesar cannot truly mourn for Nestor is the fact that Cesar was the reason why Nestor ended up that way. Cesar was very ambitious and for everything he wanted to do he needed Nestor to be there. On the other hand Nestor was more laid back and simple. Nestor only dreamt of a simple life a small bar in Cuba would have been enough for him. However Cesarââ¬â¢s ambition was insatiable. Cesarââ¬â¢s insatiable ambition caused Nestorââ¬â¢s unhappiness. In the book to quote Cesar said: ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s no dream, itââ¬â¢s our lifeâ⬠(Mambo Kings Plays Songs of Love, Hijuelos). This is one of the reasons why Cesar cannot truly mourn for Nestor. Cesar cannot truly mourn for Nestor because he knew that Nestor was not happy. Cesar knew that when Nestor died his life was empty and incomplete. Considering this fact is it possible for Cesar to feel mourning for Nestor? No, because the emotion that lingered with Cesar on Nestorââ¬â¢s death could not have been mourning. The emotion that lingered with Cesar is guilt and not mourning. He felt guilty for driving his brother to unhappiness. He felt guilty for leading his brother to a life his brother never wanted. Carrying these kinds of emotions will not allow us to mourn for anyone. If anything this kind of guilt will drive us to anger for ourselves. However these kinds of emotions will not elicit mourning. Mourning is a word we often carelessly use to describe someoneââ¬â¢s feeling when someone important to them passes. However, as argued and contended by this paper just because someone we love dies does not necessarily imply that the emotion we feel is mourning. There are a lot of other emotions one may possess when someone passes away. More often the emotion that we feel is not mourning. This argument however does not devoid or considers that one does not feel mourning when someone close to them dies. On the contrary it submits that mourning is indeed an emotion felt by anyone of us for the loss of someone but does not necessarily apply for all cases. The story of Cesar and Nestor is one example where a brother cannot truly mourn for another because of envy and guilt. The clearest expression of guilt instead of mourning was when Cesar said: ââ¬Å"I would trade places with him right now, if I could.. â⬠(Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, Hijuelos) Works Cited Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, Oscar Hijuelos
Summary of Should a Woman Work Outside The Home?
NABIL MUHAMMAD 16612299 An essay titled ââ¬Å" Should A Woman Work Outside The Home? ââ¬Å", written by Mohammed Akade Osman, states that there are so much serious social problems which emerge in socieies where woman work outside their homes. Devorce rate, crime rate and immoral acts increase as well as social injustice is formed. Woman should take appropriate job for their good itself. I agree with Mr. Osmanââ¬â¢s statements, because as time grows, i often find or hear each problem occurs everywhere in my experience, especially for household and immoral problems.Mr. Osman thinks that the opinion which states that a woman working outside their homes has the same right wth men, social independence, and financial freedom, is absolutely the way of petty minded, ââ¬Å" it certainly does not take into consideration the serious social problems â⬠. The Koran and The Bible religious view also states ââ¬Å" that the women would should stay at home and do the homework â⬠.I a gree with The authorââ¬â¢s statement, as i have ever seen some facts from TV or newspaper to justify the authorââ¬â¢s statement, one of them, that is a women who has social independence will usually have no limit of her assertion, especially with men. Consequently, there will be deviations or negatif impact, such as, murder, raping, etc. Mr. Osman stresses perhaps society will be destroyed by the problems where the woman go to work, as it change the normal situation should be.For example, menââ¬â¢s job has been taken by women, women cannot keep their household well as they are busy with their jobs and so do their husband. I agree with the writer, I have ever heard, my brother found easily a job in the past, but when the period had changed, where job vacancy was hard to find, he told me that he saw there are more woman than men in his workplace because the company where he worked had prioritized woman than men.Furthermore, i have ever had a friend, he looked so depressed eve ry he saw his friend with their parents, then i tried to know, he told me that he hated both of his parents because they were always busy with his job, so he felt ignored by them. I think i realize that what the writer states is right. The Author also thinks that the morals of the society decrease or even lose, ââ¬Å" As women desert their natural jobs as the keepers of virtue and the teachers of culture ââ¬Å". Women stayed at home in the past, so their serious crime seldom occurred, but now it is something usual. Also, illegitimately pregnancy becomes a common occurence for unmarried women as it results of taking themselves in contact with men in the society where they work. I exactly agree with Mr. Osmanââ¬â¢s statement. My neighbor were pregnant out of wedlock, as i knew she was stolid, but after she had just worked in a company for about 3 month, it occurred. In summary, the contain of the essay written by Mr. Osman is the same with my view. It is true that women should sta y at home, as there are more disavantage than advantage for societies if woman who work outside their homes.

Rally Round the Trade Name Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Rally Round the Trade Name - Assignment Example The main characters, in this case, are Rally and Herman. Rally feels that Herman infringed his business because although his name is Herman he uses Rally as his business name. Rally fails to have solid grounds to sue because Herman established his business name first in this area of jurisdiction and hence he cannot be sued for it (Rally round the trade name, 2010). 1. Explain whether or not the fact that Gabbyââ¬â¢s surname is Rally gives her the right to use it any way she wishes. In life, one has a right to use whatsoever name he or she decides as a business name especially when that name is your real name. In the movie, Gabby has a right to use her surname, but in her case the usage of her surname Rally is legal. For this reason, she is under the obligation to make sure that by using her last name she does not stir a conflict with an already existing company that uses the name. If within the same geographical area the company with the same name exists and uses it as its trade name or the name is part of a trading name, then serious consequences are likely to be faced. The law of the land permits the bona fide use of the surname only for the trade name. If an unregistered company is running in the same geographical area and it is using the same trade name, Gabby will still be a victim of an infringement of the trade name. Thus, she must take great care while using her surname as her company trade name. In commerce, it is of less concern or does not make any d ifference whether one is using his or her real name or whatsoever name. The issue will be if one is infringing on a business name of somebody else. Therefore, Gabby must register it first to use her surname as her trademark or trade name (Rally round the trade name, 2010).

Equality and Diversity Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Equality and Diversity Management - Essay Example For example, companies which have long remained a part of the old boys club may find it difficult to change overnight to become culturally accepting of not too many boys and having younger employees work in higher positions within the company. Even large multinationals operating in the UK such as DuPont and GE have had cultural problems while creating equality and diversity which goes to so that getting there is not an easy task.In terms of recent developments, diversity and equality are being seen as of the factors that could give a competitive advantage to a company and make it perform better than its rivals. A high level of diversity and equality can help to motivate employees and make them more productive. This idea has been developed to the extent that some organisations are taking diversity levels and the creation of equality as a one of their strategic objectives (CIPD, 2006). In such situations, the HR managers and the policy makers of the organisation are made responsible fo r creating a work environment where diversity is supported and equality is established.Fredmen (2001) says that in this regard, fourth generation equality legislation becomes very important because it improves the participation of affected groups in the decision making process. ââ¬Å"Fourth generation equality laws based on a positive duty to promote equality rather than simply to refrain from discrimination are being actively developed in several jurisdictions. Mainstreaming means that equality is not just an add-on or after-thought to policy.

Nursing Assessment and Care of a Patient Following a CVA Essay
Nursing Assessment and Care of a Patient Following a CVA - Essay Example He has not passed urine since admission. He exhibits some paresis, and is leaking saliva at the right side of his mouth. Two possible nursing diagnosis related to this patientââ¬â¢s condition include: Risk for aspiration related to impaired swallowing secondary to cerebrovascular accident; Risk for falls related to bodily weakness, secondary to CVA. This paper shall discuss the patientââ¬â¢s assessment data and interventions which can be implemented for the patient. Body Assessment 1: Risk for aspiration related to impaired swallowing secondary to cerebrovascular accident. This nursing diagnosis relates to this patientââ¬â¢s assessment data because the patientââ¬â¢s swallowing reflex is compromised and he is also unable to control his saliva flow into his tracheobronchial passages. As a result, his saliva getting into his bronchial tubes and on to his lungs is a significant possibility. Two priority nursing interventions to address the problem includes: clear secretions f rom the mouth or throat with a tissue of gentle suction; and maintain side-lying position. Clear secretions from the mouth or throat with a tissue of gentle suction This intervention would involve the regular checking of the patientââ¬â¢s mouth for saliva build-up, clearing such build-up with a tissue or via gentle suction. Preventing saliva build-up in the mouth prevents the saliva from flowing down the throat and into the bronchial tubes and lungs, thereby preventing aspiration (Carpenito-Moyet, 2008). Moreover, cleaning of the oral cavity would also help prevent the build-up of bacteria. Since the patient manifests right-sided hemiparesis, there is a need to assist the patient in controlling the saliva flow, and prevent such from flowing unconsciously down his throat. Cleaning and suctioning the mouth is suitable because it can easily reduce saliva flow and it can be managed well as an independent nursing intervention by the nurse (Carpenito-Moyet, 2008). Cleaning and suctioni ng the patientââ¬â¢s mouth would also prevent bacteria build-up and prevent any additional health issues, like aspiration pneumonia, which may arise from the patientââ¬â¢s current condition. Suctioning may however also promote dryness in the patientââ¬â¢s mouth, therefore, the suctioning must not be excessive. Suctioning may also cause oral and throat irritation. If not properly and carried out under sterile conditions, it may promote bacteria build-up (Carpenito-Moyet, 2008). Suctioning must therefore be carried out gently and with the proper application of sterile techniques. The application of suctioning among patients whose swallowing reflexes have been compromises has been proven an effective practice by various researches. In a paper by Coffman, et.al., (2007) the authors sought to investigate the benefits of using cuffed tracheotomy tubes in order to suction patientââ¬â¢s saliva. The authors were able to establish a significant decrease in aspirate with the use of intermittent suction. In effect, the authors concluded that the use of suctions can reduce the risk of aspiration and therefore reduce the patientââ¬â¢s risk for aspiration. This was also echoed in the study by Yoon and Steele (2007), where the authors highlighted the fact that proper oral care is an effective way of reducing incidents of aspiration pneumonia and bacterial colonization in the mouth. Evaluation criteria to establish efficacy of the intervention is
